ITLOS Delivers Record Damages Award in Heroic Idun Case

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) has delivered a landmark judgment in The M/T "Heroic Idun" No. 2 Case (Marshall Islands v Equitorial Guinea), awarding the largest damages in the Tribunal's history and reaffirming key principles of international maritime law. The dispute arose from the interception and detention of the Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker MT Heroic Idun and its crew in 2022.
The judgment provides important guidance on the protection of vessels and seafarers operating in international waters while reinforcing the legal framewrok governing state action at sea.
