The Mercury Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project has reached financial close, signifying a milestone in the rollout of utility-scale energy storage infrastructure in South Africa. Located near Viljoenskroon in the Free State, the 76MW/304MWh facility forms part of Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESSIPPP).
Developed under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement with the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), the project is expected to strengthen grid reliability, improve transmission capacity and support the integration of renewable energy into the national electricity system.
Once operational, the facility will connect to the Mercury Main Transmission Substation, contributing to a more resilient power network while delivering local economic benefits and supporting South Africa's broader energy transition objectives.
